Summer Chalkboard

Hey Y’all!  I’ve been having a blast with my little chalkboard sign!  I made this using an old picture frame I found in the basement and some paint a few months ago.  I’ve changed out the wording several times since and I think I may finally be getting the hang of this hand lettering thing!  I’m trying, at any rate.

Last month, I lettered the most adorable spring sign – it said, “April Showers Bring May Flowers,” and it was so, so, so cute.  My inspiration came from (where else) Pinterest & it was definitely my best work with chalk so far.  And I forgot to take a picture of the darn thing before I erased it.  Ugh!  I ended up replacing it with a simple little saying that was sweet, but not really impressive in design or technique.

But now that summer is here,  I wanted to do something really fun.  I want y’all to know, this summer chalkboard art is completely my design.  I mean, the words aren’t originally mine, of course – I must give credit to Seals & Croft there.  But the layout and fonts are all hand drawn by me without a template!  I’m so impressed with myself so I’m going to toot my own horn a little – toot!  I am thrilled with this board.  I’m so excited about chalk lettering I even bought a larger frame at a flea market a while ago to make a bigger one!  I have no idea where I’m going to put that, but I’ll have it and that’s what’s important, right?  hee hee

So, while I was in a crafty mood, I went ahead and made a beachy wreath to hang over the ‘big window’ in the family room.  I’m in love with it.  I want to live at the beach so bad, y’all!  I also wanted to add a fun saying to the window under the wreath, but chalk just doesn’t work well on glass.  Neither did The Bear’s Crayola window markers, although I used them earlier in the spring to make a design.  But it wasn’t bright enough and could barely be seen.  Lucky for me, Hobby Lobby has a website and on that website I found my new favorite thing – liquid chalk markers!  Oh, they are fantastic.  Bright, smooth colors – I drew out a little summer/beach/ocean design on the window and it was very satisfying.  What do you think?  Who wouldn’t like to catch a wave and hang ten all summer long?

Just FYI – I used a grapevine wreath I’ve had around the house forever for my beach wreath.  Lately, when I make a wreath, I’ve been attaching embellishments with chenille stems or wire rather than hot glue so I can take them off and reuse the wreath instead of buying a new one.  It saves money and keeps my poor husband from having to find space to store more seasonal decorations.  I did end up having to hot glue most of the shells but I think I’ll be able to remove them without any problem.  I purchased the striped ribbon, the fishing net-look ribbon, shells and flowers at Hobby Lobby during one of their spectacular sales events.  I have enough of everything but the flowers left over to make a companion piece for the back door and possibly even the front door. Now, I bought those items in-store, which is probably my favorite place to be, honestly.  I swear it’s my Shangri-La!  Soooo much fun …
While I won’t be surfing or hanging much of anything but laundry this summer, I wanted to share my fun craft projects with y’all.  Maybe you’ve been inspired to do some summer crafting at your house, too?  I’d love to know what you’re making to turn your home into a ‘beach retreat’.
Love & Blessings –
